South Africa records first death from mpox: Who is at risk of monkeypox?

South Africa has recorded its first confirmed death from Mpox, the country's health minister has announced.

A 37-year-old man died as a result of the virus on Monday after being admitted to a hospital in Gauteng province three days earlier, said minister Joe Phaahla.

Mr Phaala said that all five cases recorded in the country this year - another in Gauteng, and three in KwaZulu-Natal - were classed as severe and required hospitalisation.

He said all were men aged between 30 and 39, who had not been to other countries experiencing an outbreak - suggesting that the disease was being transmitted locally.

Mpox, formerly called monkeypox, is a viral infection transmitted through close contact.

Initial symptoms include fever, headaches, swellings, back pain, aching muscles, which can develop into a rash.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of mpox in 2022. Although this ended last year, low cases are still being reported in some countries.


Who is at risk of monkeypox?

People who have multiple or new sexual partners are currently most at risk. Engaging communities of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men to raise awareness is essential to protect those most at risk. If you are a man who has sex with other men, know your risk and take steps to protect yourself and others.


How is monkeypox caused?

Monkeypox spreads when a person comes in contact with an animal or someone with the virus. Transmission occurs through Direct contact with an infected person's bodily fluids, sores, scabs, or respiratory droplets. It can also occur through cuddling, kissing, or sex.


What is Mpox?

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral disease similar to smallpox caused by the monkeypox virus. Here are key details about mpox, including its symptoms, transmission, prevention, and treatment


Is mpox an STI?

Finally, a growing body of evidence suggests that sexual transmission is the predominant mode of transmission for mpox virus. We therefore conclude that mpox is a sexually transmitted disease.


Symptoms

Mpox typically presents with the following symptoms, which may appear 5 to 21 days after exposure:

  1. Initial Symptoms

    • Fever
    • Headache
    • Muscle aches
    • Backache
    • Swollen lymph nodes
    • Chills
    • Exhaustion
  2. Rash

    • Develops 1 to 3 days after the fever
    • Begins as flat lesions, then progresses to raised bumps, vesicles (small fluid-filled blisters), pustules (blisters filled with pus), and finally scabs.
    • Usually starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, including the hands, feet, and genital area.


Transmission

Mpox spreads through:

  1. Animal-to-Human Transmission

    • Direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or lesions of infected animals.
    • Consumption of undercooked meat and other products of infected animals.
  2. Human-to-Human Transmission

    • Close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions, or recently contaminated objects.
    • Prolonged face-to-face contact or intimate physical contact, including sexual contact.


Prevention

To prevent mpox:

  1. Avoid Contact with Infected Individuals and Animals

    • Limit exposure to people with mpox symptoms and animals that could carry the virus.
    • Avoid handling materials used by infected individuals or animals.
  2. Practice Good Hygiene

    • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and masks when caring for someone with mpox.
  3. Vaccination

    • The smallpox vaccine provides some protection against mpox.
    • Post-exposure vaccination can be effective if administered within 4 days of exposure.


Treatment

There is no specific treatment for mpox, but the following supportive care measures can help manage symptoms:

  1. Symptom Relief

    • Pain relievers and fever reducers (e.g., ibuprofen, acetaminophen).
    • Antihistamines for itching.
  2. Antiviral Medications

    • In some cases, antiviral drugs developed for smallpox (e.g., tecovirimat, cidofovir) may be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
  3. Hydration and Nutrition

    • Maintain adequate fluid intake and nutrition.


When to Seek Medical Attention

If you suspect you have mpox or have been exposed to someone with mpox, contact a healthcare provider promptly for evaluation and guidance. Early diagnosis and supportive care can significantly improve outcomes.

Public health authorities may implement measures to control the spread of mpox, such as:

Vitamins Information: Vitamin B12 for Red Blood Cells


Vitamin B12, also called Cobalamin, helps maintain healthy Nerve cells and the formation of red Blood cells. In collaboration with Vitamins B6 and B9, Cobalamin supports some bodily functions, including our genetic makeup.

Ginseng Vitamin B12 deficiency results in anemia, lethargy, loss of appetite, constipation, and weight loss. Other symptoms include swelling of the tongue, some memory loss, confusion, and some degree of dementia.

People at most risk of suffering a Vitamin B12 deficiency are those with a gastrointestinal problem that limits the stomach's ability to soak up vitamin B12.

People who practice veganism and eat no meat or dairy products will have minimal dietary access to Vitamin B12 and should take supplements separately.

Pregnant women and lactating mothers are at risk of having a deficiency of Vitamin B12 and may need to take supplements.

People who have had parts of their stomach or intestines removed because of an accident or disease, such as Crohn's disease, may not be able to absorb B12 from their food. In such cases, a Vitamin B12 supplement is strictly required.

Elderly people may lose the natural ability to absorb Cobalamin from their food, which ultimately leads to neuropsychiatric disorders. If a doctor detects a B12 deficiency, he may recommend a cobalamin-fortified diet or a Vitamin B12 supplement to correct the issue.

Unlike most other water-soluble vitamins, the body does not dispose of Cobalamin daily. In fact, the collection gathers Vitamin B12, which is stored in the liver and kidneys. Consequently, a Vitamin deficiency is not noticeable for several years after the B12 intake has ceased.

Vitamin B12 is found in the liver, kidneys, eggs, cheese, shellfish, tuna, salmon, and bluefish-fortified breakfast cereals.

Apart from supplements, the only vegan source of B12 is the Chinese herb Dang Gui, or female ginseng, which the Chinese use for treating anemia.

Because Vitamin B12 has a shallow toxic level, there have been no known cases of people suffering any ill effects from an excessive intake of Vitamin B12.

In this post, I will discuss a straightforward strategy that anyone can use to help improve/maintain their mental health, CLANG. Every day in the news and across social media, there are constant articles about the mental health crisis and the fact that more and more people are suffering from conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. Statistics state that 'suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, which is why we need to care for our mental health as much as possible. The stresses of 21st-century living can sometimes feel overwhelming, and we are constantly being pulled in different directions: friends, family, work, relationships, social media, and sometimes it can feel hard to keep up with it all. We all know we should eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise regularly, but many don't know how to look after our mental health. 'With an estimated 50% of all Americans diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime, what can we do, as individuals, to help ourselves?

In the UK, health professionals promote an acronym CLANG, which can be applied anywhere, at any time, to protect and improve our mental health. It is straightforward, requires no equipment, can take as little as half an hour a day, and doesn't have to cost you a thing. Regularly following this strategy can decrease stress levels, make you feel happier, and cope better with daily life.

CLANG stands for Connect, Learn, Active, Notice, and Give. Connect involves anything where you interact with other people; this could be as simple as sending a text message to a friend, smiling at a stranger, or asking a work colleague what they did at the weekend. The component learning is self-explanatory; it is all about widening your mind and gaining knowledge, trying to take up a new hobby, doing an online course such as learning a language or reading a book. Again, being active is very simple. Each day, you should do some form of physical activity, such as playing a sport, but if you are like me, you may be adverse to exercise! But that's okay; dance around the living room to your favorite song, go for a walk, or even hover around the house. Anything is better than nothing. What does physical activity have to do with mental health? It is scientifically proven that moving our bodies and increasing our heart rate releases endorphins, which help improve our mood.

Notice basically involves being more aware of your surroundings and thinking about what you can hear, feel, see, and smell around you at that very moment. Take time, be in the moment, hear the birds sing, and appreciate the sun's warmth. Finally, giving involves doing your bit for society, and there is such a wide range of things you could do, for example, make a cake for a family member you haven't seen in a while, volunteer at your local food bank, or sign an online petition and make a difference. The possibilities are endless.

Try to apply CLANG to your everyday life as we all have mental health, and by nourishing and attending to it, it will grow, adapt, and become more resilient to stand the challenges we all will face at some point in our lives.

This specific behaviour is a habit in which you can distinguish three critical elements of the tip, action and reward. Before I develop what they mean, we will move to the laboratory where the brain work is conducted.

In the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) laboratory, a series of tests on rats was performed in the last century. They implanted electrodes in the brain that monitored the level of brain waves. Then the animals were placed in a maze. In the beginning, the door was closed, and finally the prize - chocolate. In the beginning, nothing unusual happened. Rats after hearing a click after opening the door, by trial and error, sought out the prize - chocolate. During the search, the level of their brain waves was at a reasonably high level - the brain was working, looking for the way to the prize. However, after a short time, when the rats learned the quickest way to chocolate, the brain activity changed - it was only active at the beginning when they heard a click and finally when they ate the reward.

This is how the habits work, in the beginning, there is a clue (click), which activates the automatic action (passing the way to chocolate) ended with a reward (eating chocolate). What is very important, the activity of the brain is minimal in its middle phase. Thanks to this, when doing routine activities, we do not have to always think about them. We can use our most valuable resource, which is the brain, for other purposes - shopping planning, conversation, reflection on an exciting book, etc.


A veil of habit and the emergence of thirst

However, the practice is something even more powerful. Already during another experiment, in which the apes were given juice - but only when they pulled the lever under certain conditions - something else was discovered. It turned out that the brain could expect or even demand a reward as a result of the hint. An example is an addiction, e.g. from nicotine. By identifying a sign of a dinner, a social event, a specific hour in the brain - a desire is created, an irresistible urge to receive a reward - an injection of nicotine into the blood.

These are potent mechanisms, very effectively used, for example, in marketing. Imagine a shopping mall in which sweet cookies baked on the spot are sold at the very end. There are no extraction systems released when baking smells, aromas of fresh cookies spread throughout the gallery. Going from the store to the store, you feel the smell, minute by minute your brain is increasingly demanding to taste. The moment you walk past the stand with baked goods, he screams - buy me a cookie! Have you not found yourself at least once in this situation?


Healthy habits

In the above-described circumstances, we are also dealing with a habit loop - ascent, a habit - buying cookies, reward - a feeling of bliss as a result of raising the level of sugar in the blood.

Another example of a habit loop is to receive a text message. The sound of the incoming SMS (tip) triggers the desire to read it (habit), the brain demands a momentary entertainment (reward). Running each custom is preceded by a hint, just turn it off (no smell of cookies, no sound of incoming message) so that the customer does not activate.


Why are most of the diets doomed to failure?
